Kids Summer Art Camp: Session Two
Ages 10–13
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are excited to offer a three-day summer abstract art intensive for students ages 10–13 at the Charles City Arts Center.
Details:
Dates: July 8th, 9th & 10th
Time: 3:30–5:30 PM
Location: Charles City Arts Center
Family Showcase
Parents and caregivers are invited to join us on the final day, July 10th, from 5:00-5:30 PM for a brief showcase of student artwork. Come see what your child has created and celebrate their work!
This class will explore the bold, colorful world of abstract art inspired by Wassily Kandinsky, a pioneer of modern abstraction. Kandinsky believed that colors, shapes, and lines could express emotion much like music does. During this two-hour daily studio experience, students will investigate how art can communicate mood, rhythm, and movement.
Throughout the three days, students will:
• Study Kandinsky’s artwork, including Composition VIII
• Learn color theory concepts such as warm vs. cool colors and complementary contrasts
• Plan and design original compositions
• Use geometric tools for precise shapes and structure
• Layer paint, line work, and mixed media techniques
• Participate in peer critique and discussion
Each student will create one large, thoughtfully designed abstract painting developed over all three sessions. This class is designed to challenge older elementary and middle school students by encouraging intentional decision-making, artistic vocabulary, and creative risk-taking.
All supplies are provided. Registration is only $10 due to the generous support of the Salvation Army of Charles City.
We look forward to supporting your child’s creativity and artistic growth this summer. If you have any questions, please contact the Charles City Arts Center. Class will be taught by our summer kids’ educational team: Shaune Fields and Rowyn Schmidt.
Sincerely,
Emily Kiewel - Director
